Painting section

The fifteen rooms of the Painting section are on the second floor of Palazzo Viani Dugnani.

The visit starts from the room containing Fifteenth century frescoes and continues in those devoted to the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. Numerous paintings are of the lake and its surrounding mountains.

The rooms illustrate works by the “scapigliato” painter Daniele Ranzoni, from Intra, and his first teacher Luigi Litta; the romanticism of the mountain painter Federico Ashton; exponents of Lombardy naturalism like Achille Tominetti, Eugenio Gignous, Guido Boggiani; the “verismo” of Arnaldo Ferraguti; the symbolism of Sophie Browne della Valle di Casanova; and the divisionists, prominent among whom are Vittore Grubicy De Dragon, Carlo Fornara, Cesare Maggi, Guido Cinotti.

The visit to the section ends with works by some masters of the Twentieth century such as Siro Penagini and Mario Tozzi, the latter represented in three rooms.
