International Conference Lakeside Gardens in Europe
Verbania, 30 September - 8 October 2006
Invitation to attend

A garden is, by definition, a space enclosed within boundaries that mark the difference between the appearance of the outlying areas and that of the microcosm inside, created by mans imagination and knowledge. When one of the boundaries of the garden is an expanse of water, there is ample scope for spectacular compositions in artistic and environmental terms. As an inspirational motif and an ideological and philosophical premise, lakes characterised an important period in the history of Western gardens.
In countless European gardens the presence of a lake, whether natural or artificial, is a key attraction. The case of Lake Maggiore is emblematic in this respect because its banks are dotted with hundreds of gardens that form a single vast garden lying between water and mountains. The unique qualities of the site, with other lakes and other garden systems in the proximities, make it a historic and internationally reputed location, well suited to host a Conference on the art of gardens that will present the most notable examples of lakeside gardens in Europe.
The Villas and Gardens Archive of the Museum of Landscape in Verbania has always focused on historic lakeside gardens and last years (after signing a special Convention with Regione Piemonte and the Province of Verbania) this activity has spread to the whole Piedmont area and involves research activities, collection and diffusion of data. |
| Regione Piemonte, in collaboration with the Villas and Gardens Archive of the Museum of Landscape will organise an International Conference on Lakeside Gardens in Europe, which will be held in Verbania from 30 September to 8 October 2006 and will include, among other events: an Exhibition of illustrative panels accompanied by the publication of a Catalogue/Atlas (to be presented on the occasion), and a Photographic competition on the theme of The Garden and Water, organised in collaboration with FIF Fondazione Italiana per la Fotografia. |
The Conference will coincide with and form part of Editoria & Giardini 2006, a Book Festival focused on Italian and foreign publishing on gardens, organised by the Comune of Verbania and now in its sixth edition.
The Conference will also host the annual meeting of international delegates from the ICOMOS-IFLA Scientific International Committee on Historic Gardens Cultural Landscapes.
The Organising Secretariat of the Conference is based at the Regione Piemonte Planning Sector for Protected Areas (tel. +39 011 4325985 5977; e-mail: giardinidilago2006@regione.piemonte.it) |
| We look forward to welcoming you at the Conference. With kind regards, |
