On the occasion of the event Lakeside Gardens in Europe, to be held from 30 September to 8 October, an educational exhibition of photographs will illustrate over 70 years activity of lake research performed by the Institute for Ecosystem Study, formerly the Italian Institute of Hydrobiology, the research centre based in Pallanza in the 19th century Villa De Marchi.
In recounting the history of the distinguished Institute, the exhibition aims to inform a wide audience about the contribution to scientific innovation, focusing on the application of its research activity to territorial management.
Lakes and gardens have a close association: obviously, because together they form a unique type of landscape, but the prime link is that the presence of a great water mass tempers the climate and favours the wide range of ornamental plant species that are such a striking characteristic of the lake area. The exhibition shows the history of the Institute from its foundation to the present day, with information on the main tools used for research. Prominence is given to the climatic and weather conditions of the Lake Maggiore area, variations in the lake water level with the increasingly frequent alternation of flood and low water conditions, and the relation of these to ongoing climate change.
Explanatory panels illustrate the vegetation covering the shores of the lake, a link between the two environments of land and water. The last panels describe the qualitative evolution of the Italian lakes and their state of health; furthermore, they illustrate the recovery of polluted waterbodies following research performed by the staff of the Institute. |
