The lake as a mirror. Literary, historical and philosophical aspects
The first Session will discuss literary and philosophical inspirations that have promoted the presence of water in the garden as a scenographic element. The history of gardens mirrored by water will be presented through descriptions and images from Renaissance to Romanticism.

2nd Session

Lake garden and garden lake
The second Session will discuss the idea of nature underlying the birth of the English landscape garden. Having a lake as a central feature this kind of garden got known in all Europe thanks to printings and early works focusing on the landscape. The fascinating theme of gardens delimited by water and the interest of philosophers, writers and artists for the island garden both in representations and in real achievements will also be discussed.

The lakeside garden and its environment. Proposals for research and interpretation
The third Session will discuss the influence of the lake environment in the composition of gardens located near a lake. Studying the geographical environmental and botanical features is a necessary first step towards protection and revaluation of the lake gardens and their landscape.

Lake gardens in Europe: management and revaluation
The forth Session considers some themes related to conservation and management methods. Some significant examples in Italy and in Europe will be introduced focusing on specific problems and proposals aiming at the revaluation of Italian and European lake gardens.
