{"id":10720,"date":"2017-11-15T14:51:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T13:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.museodelpaesaggio.it\/scultura\/"},"modified":"2020-07-23T11:19:41","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T09:19:41","slug":"sculpture","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.museodelpaesaggio.it\/en\/sculpture\/","title":{"rendered":"The Arturo Martini Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last room focuses on Arturo Martini, one of the museum&#8217;s most important collections: the artwork selected covers the whole of the sculptor\u2019s career and is organized chronologically.<br \/>\nThe young \u2018heads\u2019 <em>The Uncle<\/em> (1927) and <em>La Scoccombrina<\/em> (1927), together with <em>The Desperate Woman<\/em> (1929) and the later <em>La Cicci<\/em> (i.e. Egle Rosmini, 1937) express the artist\u2019s ability to work with a range of materials (terracotta, bronze, wood) and his extraordinary ability to grasp influences by other artists and movements including from the past (the former two sculptures are decidedly Expressionist in style while <em>La Cicci<\/em> seems to echo Medardo Rosso\u2019s 19th-century experiments).<br \/>\nFrom the 1930s onwards Martini developed an artistic language characterized by small figurines (in juxtaposition to the monumental work done as official art for the regime) which sometimes encompasses references to the artistic tradition of previous centuries. This is, for example, the case of <em>The Cart<\/em> (1933-1934), where a body held up by four men seems to contain allusions to Renaissance Deposition images.<br \/>\nSometimes, by contrast, the sculptor draws about ancient sacred traditions for a repertoire of images and situations: <em>The Visitation<\/em> (1936) shows an embrace between two women, while the <em>Prodigal Son<\/em> (1933) shows a father-son embrace and the <em>Rape of the Sabine Women<\/em> (1938) depicts a chaotic and frenzied battle scene.<br \/>\nA further three paintings are on show between the windows \u2013 <em>The Jockey<\/em> (1939), <em>Tennis at the Lido<\/em> (1940) and <em>Green Landscape<\/em> (1946) \u2013 testifying to the artist\u2019s relationship with painting from the 1930s onwards, to mixed critical reception.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last room focuses on Arturo Martini, one of the museum&#8217;s most important collections: the artwork selected covers the whole of the sculptor\u2019s career and is organized chronologically.
